Station Approach North. Merstham. 1973. For Want of a Shoe. Mr J.A. Ibbotson a Master Farrier has two apprentice farriers working for him at The Forge, Walton Street, Walton on the Hill, Surrey. The apprenticeship scheme that the Farriers' Company decided to sponsor in 1958 has been expanding satisfactorily. There are about 1,200 shoeing smiths in the country, many of them elderly, to deal with a horse population of 400,000 - and still growing. Something like 1,500 smiths are really needed. The Farriers' Company scheme had 90 apprentices under training in 1972. Photo shows:- Mr. J.A.
